is a sports management company based in
Singapore and is a leading provider of high quality of tennis and
sports instructional programs. With our extensive experience
and network in the industry on and off court, Sports By 5
provides world-class tennis and sports instructional to all ages
and levels in Singapore and the region. The company was
founded by tennis professional Gary Tan also currently partners
Professional Tennis Registry (PTR), the world's largest tennis-teachers certification body to
provide the highest standard of certification testing and continuing education to tennis
teachers around the region.
In addition to tennis programs and coaches education, Sports By 5 also have a highly trained
in-house physiotherapist who can offer consultation services in injury prevention programs,
sports rehabilitation and training. Currently, Sports By 5 conducts talks and workshops on
sports first-aid and injury management to our corporate clients, professional athletes as well
as schools and tertiary institutions.
In 2009, Sports By 5 also started a Tennis Tours business for clients who love to combine the
pleasures of traveling and tennis. We design all-inclusive tennis packages for participants that
features daily tennis clinics with their own coach who will travel with them to regional resort
destinations as well as tennis Grand Slam events.
Other current projects include an online video instruction (2013/14) as well as charity tennis
bonanzas.

Gary Tan - Founder
Gary began playing tennis at the age of 12 and was a successful junior. After a stellar career in junior tennis, Gary left Singapore to play US college tennis in 1992. He went on to achieve both All-American and Distinguished Academic All-American honors for outstanding achievements in tennis and academics, a record held only by two students in the history of the college. During his sophomore year, he put together a school record, 28-6 win-loss record and was nationally ranked No.6 in the NJCAA National Championships in both singles and doubles. After earning a scholarship, Gary transferred to Flagler College, St. Augustine, Florida, which competed in the NAIA. Playing on their starting lineup, he was voted "Most Improved Player" by his fellow teammates. Upon earning a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Economics, Gary returned to Singapore where he featured prominently in Davis Cup for the Singapore National Team and South East Asia (SEA) Games training squads.
Gary also had extensive experience working as a teaching professional at the Van Der Meer Tennis Center in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for two years working and training the elite World Class Training Program and working alongside tennis teaching legend and PTR founder, Dennis Van Der Meer. He also traveled extensively with PTR Master Professional, Dr. Ludovit Cap and former PTR Director Of Education, Myles Williams in conducting workshops and tennis universities across many major cities in the United States. Gary also trained under PTR Education Consultant Anne Pankhurst and is the only PTR member to hold a Professional rating for all the Adult, Junior Development and Performance pathways in Singapore. Currently, he is also PTR's Southeast Asian Director, International Tester and Clinician in PTR's Adult, Junior Development and Performance Certification Workshops. He also holds certifications in United States Tennis Association (USTA) Level 1 Sports Science and Etcheberry Certification For Tennis and is a certified ITN (International Tennis Number) Tester.
Upon returning to Singapore in 1999, Gary was invited to join Singapore-based tennis management company, Savitar. He was appointed Savitar's first Director of Tennis and Marketing Manager. His duties included managing all of its Adult and Junior Instructional Programs at the renowned Willow Stream Spa Tennis location at The Fairmont Singapore and the Marina Tennis Club. His strong marketing background also led to the creation of the Savitar and Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) website as well as the design of the current ATF logo. In addition to his teaching and marketing duties, Gary also initiated the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) relationship as PTR Singapore's course-coordinator. Under his charge, he conducted and coordinated all PTR Tennis Certification and Coaches Development courses in Singapore and Malaysia from 1999-2007 on behalf of Savitar.
In March 2008, Gary left Savitar to form Sports By 5 and the PTR relationship continued with Gary at
Sports By 5.
Alvin started playing while attending the St. Joseph's Institution (Independent) and competed in all of the school's National School's Competition tournaments and has over 15 years of playing experience. Alvin has a strong passion for teaching and often inspires his students with his positive energy and enthusiasm.
He gained certification at the 2009 PTR Adult Development Certification, attaining a "Professional" rating and has been coaching on a part-time basis since. In 2011, Alvin joined the Sports By 5 coaching panel and currently supports the weekly programs at the St. Joseph's Institution International School.
A multi-faceted individual, Alvin is also an accomplished musician and plays guitar on one of Singapore's most exciting pop-rock band, 53A.
Cheryl began playing tennis at the age of 9 and has developed her playing skills to a successful tennis teaching career.
She spent most of her teens participating in junior and school tournaments as well as various Open tournaments such as the STA Open. Cheryl has had great success representing her Alma Mater, Jurong Junior College and Singapore Institute of Management.
After graduating with a BS in Business Management from SIM, Cheryl had a a stint working in Barclays Bank and eventually studied sports theory from STA and became a certified PTR (Professional Tennis Registry) Instructor for both the Adult and Junior Development pathways. Cheryl also founded her own Sports Management business, ProCoach in 2011 which specialized in introducing and teaching tennis to players of all skill levels. In January 2013, Cheryl was invited to join Sports by 5. Her duties include managing and coaching tennis programs of big groups as well as assisting in the Sports By 5-PTR relationship as Gary's course coordinating assistant.
